Z lavíc do praxe (From Prep to Practice) #1: The Christening of a Student Translation

Christening of the book Foxglove (author A. Grace, translation P. Hatiarová) and the first discussion named Z lavíc do praxe/From Prep to Practice discussion took place on 26 March, 2024. We discussed with two students from the University of Matej Bel, as well as translators Jana Sliacka and Patrícia Hatiarová in Banská Bystrica. 

The book launch and discussion were held in the U Francúza Jazz Club, where we launched the Slovak translation of Foxglove by Adalyn Grace. The godfather of the translation was Matej Laš. We believe that translators do not receive enough visibility, so this event was a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of our profession. The teachers and students from the University of Matej Bel were also present. The discussion was streamed and interpreted via Zoom, allowing participants to connect online from anywhere, making the information and advice accessible to everyone. Students from the University of Matej Bel interpreted the discussion, gaining valuable hands-on experience. Vanda Koniarová, a student at the university, hosted the book launch and discussion.

Following the book launch, Jana Sliacka, a graduate of the University of Matej Bel and the published translator of three literary works, joined the discussion. The man topics of the discussion included questions such as: How can students secure their first translation project during their studies? What were the biggest challenges in their first translation? What is it like to balance studying and translating at the same time? What difficulties arise when combining these aspects?, and more. The discussion provided valuable insights, perspectives and practical advice for anyone interested in pursuing translation during their studies.
