On 17 October 2024, the 12th year of Hieronymus Days took place at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University. The event was accessible to all via Zoom and recorded YouTube stream.
Doc. Mgr. Pavol Šveda, PhD. opened this year’s Hieronymus Days with a welcoming speech greeting both in-person and online guests introducing the student civic association Sa zobuď! (Wake up!).
The first discussion, Z lavíc do praxe (From Prep to Practice), was organised by the association. The host, Vanda Koniarová, interviewed talented students of translation and interpreting – Patrícia Hatiarová, Karin Korkutata, Zuzana Hudáková, and Michal Chudý, who had already gained practical experience, sharing their insights and advice.
Another engaging session took place online via Zoom. Doc. RNDr. Ondřej Bojar, Ph.D. from the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics at Charles University in Prague spoke about machine-assisted interpreting, discussing its development, common errors, practical examples, and the future of the profession.
Linda Magáthová, Barbara Sigmundová, and Milina Svítková from DoSlov, civic association for literary translators and editors, led a discussion on supporting professional growth, fostering connections, and informing the community.
The day concludes with an interactive panel discussion led by doc. Mgr. Pavol Šveda, Phd, featuring Slovak translators and interpreters. They addressed the ethical dilemmas in translation and interpreting. Ivo Poláček, Gabriela Slezáková, and Lucia Tonková shared personal perspectives on handling complex situations in translation an interpreting.
Once again, Hieronymus Days brought together inspiring members of the translation and interpreting community, who generously shared their expertise. We thank the organizers for creating this great opportunity and we look forward to the next year’s event.
